Project Description

Elderflower Legal Supports Local Mums with Type 1 Diabetes Initiative

Local mums Emma Dillon and Emma Netherwood have children of similar age who have Type 1 Diabetes. They came up with a great idea to write a children’s book explaining the condition for newly diagnosed children, their families and friends. The first book ‘Ivy and Iver take on Type 1’ was published in 2015 to great acclaim.

Following on from the success of their first book, the writer/ illustrator duo are planning their second book, where Ivy and Iver meet Rufus, the diabetic bear. This will be a collaboration with the international charity Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF).

We assisted the mums on a pro-bono basis to protect the rights in the characters they have created and put in place a suitable contract with the publishers.

Explains Netherwood:

Our diabetes nurse put us in touch with each other in the hope that we could be buddy families on a similar journey; two mums both called Emma and two type 1 toddlers called Ivy and Iver – who live only 10 minutes apart. It made sense! When we met up it was pure relief to be able to talk with each other in the language of our everyday lives and to have someone understand the new family lifestyle we were living; the carb counting, the blood glucose monitoring, the new technology we relied on and the daily highs and lows. Soon after meeting the idea of a storybook called ‘Ivy and Iver Take on Type 1’ was born! We wanted to find a way of assisting the two children and their siblings in understanding type 1, in a way that shows them their condition won’t hold them back. We also hoped to help other families deal with the condition.”

Mark Johnson, Principal at Elderflower Legal said “This was such a great project making a real difference to the lives of children diagnosed with Type 1. We were so pleased to help with the publishing contracts and protecting the authors’ rights in the characters, so that any future commercial exploitation can benefit the charity”.
